About the Movie

Silent Running (1972) is a science fiction film set in a future where all plant life on Earth has become extinct. The last remaining forests are preserved inside massive geodesic domes, each attached to large American Airlines space freighters orbiting near Saturn.

The story follows Freeman Lowell, a botanist who passionately cares for the forests aboard the spaceship Valley Forge. While the rest of the crew sees the mission only as routine, Lowell regards the domes as humanity’s last hope for survival and renewal.

When Earth authorities order the destruction of the domes and a return to commercial service, Lowell rebels. He kills his fellow crew members and takes control of the Valley Forge. Assisted only by three service drones—Huey, Dewey, and Louie—he struggles to preserve the last forest dome and keep it alive, even as the ship drifts further into isolation near Saturn.

In the end, Lowell sacrifices himself to protect the surviving forest, leaving one dome adrift in space under the care of the small robot Dewey, carrying the last fragment of Earth’s natural beauty into the cosmos.
